Sorry You Had To Postpone Your Wedding….Now What?

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

Sadly, with the recent breakout of the Coronavirus epidemic a lot of people had to postpone or cancel their weddings. In this very difficult time my heart goes out to you and I want to acknowledge that I understand what you are going through. As a vendor in the wedding industry and also as an individual who loves weddings it has been so heartbreaking to see a lot of my clients face the challenging decision of postponing their weddings. I understand how frustrating it must be to see all the planning, hard work and resources have invested go to waste. The added task of calling vendors and rescheduling or cancelling plans and sending out emails to invitees to postpone your Wedding can be very frustrating.

It is normal to feel sad, angry and disappointed. I understand the situation is very difficult to manage because it is not certain when things will return to normal and it is safe enough to go out, travel and hold large gatherings. I understand that everything looks gloomy right now but the purpose of this blog is to give you some guidance and direction as you wait for things to calm down so you can finally have the wedding of your dreams.

I put together a list of some of the things you could do to prepare for your wedding while waiting for the situation to change and some things you should not do until you are certain of what's ahead.

Please Note that if you have a Wedding Planner you may not need to take care of any of the things listed here because they should have already taken care of rearranging and postponing most services with the vendors -( That's one of the reasons why you need a wedding planner). To understand more about why you need a wedding planner please subscribe to our blog to be notified when i publish my next blog “ Are Wedding Planners Expensive?”.

Things You Do not Need To Do Until Things Settle Down

1). You do not have to pick a new date yet because of the uncertainty. You could however do so if you are picking a date at least (4 Months from now and above: Please make sure you stay updated on the news about the pandemic in your state - If your state is highly impacted by the virus, consider pushing it further ahead "maybe next year" or wait until your state reopens completely)

2)You do not have to make any down payments on any venues or to any vendors unless you are certain that you will be using their services and there is an understanding that you will let them know the wedding date when the pandemic is over.

You can also open a bank account (Specifically for the wedding) and start saving money towards the wedding until things settle down. However vendors may have great discounts going on now so it may be a good time to lock down prices, make sure that you are carefully looking at the terms and conditions of all offer and you are certain you will be using their services.

3)You don't have to cancel your wedding. You can postpone your wedding to a later date and let friends and family members know that it will be announced. But if you feel more comfortable cancelling then that's ok.

Things You Can Do

When this pandemic is over and things are back to normal, people are going to be in a hurry to get married Vendors and venues are going to be overbooked there is going to be a price surge and limited choices for many couples. To avoid this here are some things you can do:

First Thing you need to do is create an email address dedicated to everything concerning your wedding. You want all the communication about the wedding to be in one place. In your inbox create a folder for estimates. When you have officially confirmed the vendors you will be using, create folders for vendors and other folders for example bridesmaids, groomsmen etc. save all communication between you and Vendors in these folders.

After doing this, Here are some few things you can do.

1)Do some Research: Use this time to prepare for your wedding by searching online for different vendors and comparing prices. Book over the phone consultations and go over packages and have them send quotes to you for comparisons.

2)Planning: If you in the beginning phases of the wedding planning process this is the best time to start deciding the basics for your wedding like

a)What is my budget?

b)How many people do I want at the wedding

c)Location: Where will I have my wedding? Consider things like is it an outdoor or indoors wedding.

d)How many bridesmaids and groomsmen do I want in my wedding?

e)What is my wedding theme and what are the accompanying colors for my wedding?

f)What is the best dress for my body type or what kind of dress do I want?

h)Write down names of wedding invitees

g)Write down the name of everyone that you think will be part of the wedding train?

3)Select Members of the Wedding Party: Call or send out emails to people you want to be part of your wedding party and tell them you will like them to be part of your wedding when it eventually happens and if they agree. Let them know the role the will be playing or any requirements for that role.

4)Check out Venues: Some venues have great galleries online. So after reviewing them send them an email or call to see if they are still showing venues at this time and then go in to see the place. Make sure to wear a mask and practice social distancing. It will probably be one on one so you are fine.

5)Checkout Vendors: Go online and checkout some of the vendors you need. Food, cake, flowers, DJ...etc. Ask for prices or ge

t quotes.

6)Focus on you: Most bridal shops have online wedding websites. Go online and check out what is available and then create a gallery with separate folders that identifies the shop that carries the dress and its location. Do the same thing for the bridesmaids dresses ( You could also send them some of the dress styles to take a look at). Repeat the same process for every person in the wedding party.

7)What parts of the Wedding Can You Handle: If you are on a budget they are some items that might be more affordable if you handle them (Example Invitations, floral arrangements, wrapping souvenirs..etc), Make a list of what you can do on your own and get to work ordering what is needed. Many shops have discounts going on now, be sure to take advantage of this.

8)Smaller Weddings: If you prefer a smaller weddings (Just you, your spouse and witnesses). Then go ahead and get your wedding done. I have seen people get married during this period and the plan to do a bigger celebration later with friends and loved ones. You do not have to wait.

And lastly remember : A great marriage isn’t something that just happens; it’s something that must be created.” – Fawn Weaver
